Skid Steer Operation Safety
You’ve no doubt seen many a skid steer loader being used to haul large payloads of material or use attachments to complete various tasks on a construction site. These big powerful machines are extremely versatile and practical for several different purposes.
However, their sheer size and power level also means that skid steers can be dangerous if operated by careless hands. Be a responsible skid steer operator by following these safety tips, courtesy of Upstate Equipment, your New York skid steer dealer.
Mount & Dismount With Care
Always make sure that your skid steer is on stable ground and parked before you leave it or enter it. The attachment it’s currently using should be flat on the ground or the loader’s lift arms should be locked in place. Use the three-point mounting system to climb into the cab (both hands and one foot). Ensure the machine is turned off and the parking brake is set before you leave the cab.
Look Around You
Your loader’s attachments and frame may make it more challenging to see everything around you, so you’ll have to be more vigilant. You’ll also need to alert anyone else working in the same area that you’re going to be operating the skid steer so that they can stay out of the way. It may be helpful to assign someone to “spot” you as you maneuver around a tight worksite so that you don’t bump into anything or anyone.
Stay Within Parameters
Do not operate your skid steer outside of its natural operational parameters. The manufacturer of your machine set weight and usage limits on it for a reason. You’ll need to maneuver the machine slowly and carefully at all times, and if you experience any sign of malfunction, you’ll want to stop the machine safely as soon as possible to get it repaired. Approach slopes head-on to avoid slipping down them and keep your loader bucket low to the ground while you’re in motion.
