How to Get Your Tractor Out of the Mud
While your tractor is designed to cross through rugged terrain on your farm or ranch, there are occasions where it simply doesn’t have the power to get out of a jam. One common issue for tractor operators is that they try to drive through a muddy field, only for their tractor’s wheels to become completely mired in a puddle and they can’t get out. Here are some strategies to try the next time that happens to you.
Lift Up Implements
Before you do anything else, raise the implements of your tractor so that they’re not in contact with the ground anymore. Engage your differential lock while you examine the situation.
Move Forward or Backward
Try to ease your tractor forward at a constant rate to get through the mud. If the wheels start to spin or it doesn’t budge, stop and try to reverse instead. Again, if the tractor seems to stall, don’t let it get stuck further. Park it and try something else.
Get Boards & A Shovel
Sometimes, you can dig out mud around the wheels of your tractor and put boards down that line up with the tires to give you some traction for reversing out of the pit.
Phone a Friend
If all else fails, you may just need to call a friend or neighbor with a strong tractor or pickup truck who can come tow you out. Be careful not to overburden the other vehicle and to use strong chains on both drawbars, and have the driver pull the tractor out backwards.
